Report: International Training on e-Library

University of Waikato, New Zealand, DlnetSA, LISolutions and e-HAP jointly organized a  three day international training on e-Library at COMSATS Headquarter, Islamabad.

Fifteen professionals from different areas of Pakistan participated in this training.  The purpose of this training was to equip the professionals with advanced level training on Greenstone Digital Library Software and Koha ILS.  Both the software are Free and Open Source and can be used to manage the libraries having hard form material and digital material.

For this purpose Digital Library Network of South Asia (DlnetSA) has created an integrated live CD having both the software which are integrated to give the complete solution for professionals.  List of participants is given below

Trainers of this training, Dr. Muhammad Ramzan (Director LUMS Library), Mr. Ata ur Rehman (Free and Open Source Activist, LISolutions), Muhammad Shafiq Rana (Coordinator LISolutions) and Mr. Arslan Farooq (LISolutions) delivered lectures and provided hands-on training on the above mentioned Free and Open Source Software.

On demand of participants a demo for conversion of data from MS Excel / Access to MARC using MARCEdit was also presented.  Participants found this very useful.

We are thankful to PLWO, PULISAA and Hailey College of Commerce for their support to make this training a successful event as partner.

The participants of this training decided to create a dynamic community of practice for TLS.  For this purpose a Mailing List / LISTSERV has been created for the users of TLS.

Report: Training on “Open Source Tools for Digital Archives”

Bahria University Islamabad and LISolutions jointly organized a One Day Training on “Open Source Tools and Techniques for Digital Archives” at Bahria University, Islamabad on Saturday March 12, 2011 (09:00 AM to 6:00 PM).  More than 25 (Twenty Five) library professionals participated in this training.

Training was started with the name of Almighty Allah with a simple but graceful inauguration ceremony.  Mr. Ata ur Rehman (From LISolutions) was the lead trainer.  While the other trainers were Mr. Sher Afzal (Bahria University, Islamabad) and Mr. M. Shafiq Rana (SECP, Islamabad).

After the inauguration, Mr. Shafiq Rana gave an impressive presentation on “Introduction to digital archives: GSDL, DSpace, EPrints and Copyright”.  He presented a comparison between different Open Source tools for managing digital archives.

Second session was on “Cataloging of digital contents and Metadata”.  This lecture was presented by Mr. Sher Afzal.  He presented the difference between the cataloging of hard form bibliographic material and digital material.  Also different types of Metadata, METS, Dublin Core, Qualified Dublin Core and AGLS was the main focus of this presentation.

Last two sessions were conducted by Mr. Ata ur Rehman (Open Source Tools for Digital Contents and Step-by-step guide about how to create digital archive) followed by practical session in which participants got hands on training about the installation of Open Source Software (GSDL) and its basic configuration.

At the end of this event, participants also presented their views about this learning activity.  Professionals found this training very effective and useful. In closing session of this training, certificates were distributed among the participants.

A talk on “Free and Open Source Alternatives for Library Operations”

Punjab University Library and Information Science Alumnae Association (PULISAA) and Main Library, University of the Punjab organized a talk on “Free and Open Source Alternatives for Library Operations” at Main Library, University of  the Punjab on January 15, 2011.

Mr. Muhammad Shafiq Rana, President PULISAA, in his opening speech introduced the topic and its importance for library professionals.  He also gave the token of thanks to Ch. Muhammad Hanif, Chief Librarian, PU Main Library and Co-organizer of this talk for extending his support for this event and the efforts of PULISAA team for this talk.

Mr. Ata ur Rehman, Coordinator LISolutions, was the facilitator on the above mentioned talk.  Prof. Dr. Kanwal Amin, Patron PULISAA and Chair Person, Department of Library and Information Science, University of the Punjab was the Chief Guest.  Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Ali and Ch. Muhmmad Hanif, Chief Librarian, PU was the guest of honor.

3 Days Training of “Koha 3 Library System” at UOS, Sargodha

A three days training on Free and Open Source Software, Koha was organized by LISolutions on October 28-30, 2010 at Central Library, University of Sargodha (UOS).

It was a customized training specially designed for the library professionals of UOS.  The following professionals participated in this training:
